CommentsSmall Boat and Marina Fires - Dear Sirs: I am a recently retired Lieutenant of the New York City Fire Department's Marine Division. During my 34-year tenure with the FDNY I worked at structural firefighting in some of the busiest areas of New York City. In my last ten years I also acted in the capacity of Training Officer for the FDNY Marine Division. I hold a US Coast Guard License as a Ships Master and I've been certified as a Fire instructor both within New York State and Nationally. My articles on Marine Firefighting have been published by The Fire Department Safety Officers Association, The New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, Fire Command and Control (web publication Chief Vincent Dunn editor), and several other website newsletters. I operate a business presenting multimedia Marine Firefighting lectures at Firefighting seminars and training sessions. I have created over 20 hours of computerized multimedia presentations and lectures that incorporate hundreds of photos and graphics. My presentations deal with fires aboard ships and boats of all sizes and are designed for the Land Based Firefighter as well as the mariner. I have delivered seminars at The FDNY Fire Chiefs Association, The Maryland Fire/Rescue Institute, Pt. Pleasant Beach, NJ FD, The Red Bank, NJ FD, The Deep River, CT FD, The Groton, CT FD, The Mystic, CT FD, The Rockland County Fire Training Center, The Westchester County Fire Training Center, Fire 2001 of the NYS Association of Fire Chiefs, the Long Island Firefighters Association, Atlantic Beach NY Fire Department, Long Beach NY FD, The Tarrytown, NY FD, and the Portland, Maine FD. I also delivered my seminars at the FDIC convention in Indianapolis this past April. I can offer presentations from a three-hour mini-seminar to a three-day full seminar. I can also offer customized presentations dealing with specific hazards within your area. If you feel this topic would be pertinent to any of your needs please contact me. Our 2-3 hour "Small Boat and Marina Fire" presentation has been very popular. The field of Marine Firefighting is one that has long been overlooked by land-based fire departments. This may be due to budget restraints or the fact that we thankfully do not have many major ship fires. Whatever the reason, we are looking at an area of potential physical, monetary, and ecological disaster. The financial aspect is not only due to the loss of the ship or port services. There is also a very serious legal ramification. Here is a quote from the National Fire Protection Association standard 1405 Marine Firefighting for Land Based Firefighters: Chapter 15-1.2 of NFPA standard # 1405 dealing with volunteer, career, as well as mutual aid fire departments who have been defendants in law suits involving losses at ship fires, states, "An understanding of the dangers inherent in marine fire fighting should include an understanding of the consequences of the failure to provide a standard of training, planning, response, and action equivalent to that which a department provides on the land-based portions of its response area." The business is called The Marine Firefighting Institute and is on the web at www.MarineFirefighting.com Please keep me in mind for all your future seminars and conferences. If you would like further information, or a CD with previews of our presentations, I can be reached at MarineFires@aol.com or you can reach me by phone at (845) 735-7046 Thank you, Tom Guldner

My father, David F. Benninghoff Jr. was also a member before he passed away a couple of years ago, and was with the Pine Flats Fire Department as well. Commentsbig change since I lived there to 1978.great website. keep up the good work. keith curnoles
CommentsGentleman, Great job and kudos on the web site. I see the numbers of structure fires and MVA's have increased from 1999-2000. What are the stats on the last 3 yrs. Just curious to know if your looking into the increase aggressively. Building construction, residential construction, and motor vehicles in the area are on the rise. One would hope that your FD is taking the right steps in pre-planning all the above mentioned. Developing a fire prevention program, aggressive FF training, FF recruitment, and a public relations program can boost your depts readiness, morale, along with good community relations. Volunteering is a tedious task and a thankless job. Putting forth the time for such programs takes motivation, discipline, and most of all, members TIME. Starting now should bring positive results which ensures a safer community and a smarter FD!! Remember, the dinosaurs were left behind during the evolution, BE PRO-ACTIVE!!!!!!! Keep up the good job, and the carinival is great as always. IN Brotherhood, gruntm203@aol.com
